Perth commuters lift train to free man's leg

  • People power saved a commuter whose leg became wedged between the gap in Perth, Western Australia during rush hour
  • Transperth praised the actions of all who helped lift the train off the man
  • The incident was not a problem caused by overcrowding
  • Ambulance were called but the man escaped without injury

Commuters and railway staff teamed up to free a man by rocking a train carriage to free his leg after he became trapped between the platform and a carriage on Wednesday morning.

The man was boarding a rush hour train at Stirling station, 9km northwest of Perth, Western Australia, at 8.50am when he slipped and one leg became wedged in the gap.

Quick-thinking passengers and staff saved the man leg's, as it was being squeezed by the 90-tonne of train, by collectively rocking the carriage.

An ambulance was called to the station but the man did not sustain any serious injuries.

Mr Hynes said it was not a problem caused by overcrowding and praised the actions of staff and passengers who helped free the man.

'Everyone sort of pitched in. It was people power that saved someone from possibly quite serious injury,' he said.

Killer kick kills Indonesian footballer Akli Fairuz

A Indonesian striker Akli Fairuz, 27, playing in one of the country's top leagues has died after a goalkeeper kicked him in the stomach during a recent match.

Fairuz sustained serious injuries after the challenge during a game on May 10 in Banda Aceh, on western Sumatra island, said Mahfudin Nigara from the Indonesian Football Association.

Video footage showed the player, from club Persiraja Banda Aceh, run into the box of the opposing team, PSAP Sigli, to take a shot after the ball rebounded off the goalkeeper. But the goalkeeper ran out and kicked him in the stomach as he took the shot, knocking him to the ground.

Akli died due to a rupture in his intestine on May 16 from the goalie's kick. The football association had set up a team to investigate the incident.

Why India’s No 3 women’s doubles player Prajakta Sawant doesn't feel like playing for India anymore?

The Mumbai girl has been engaged in a court battle with the Badminton Association of India since 2012 when she alleged that national coach Pullela Gopichand ‘mentally harassed’ her.Mumbai-based 2011 and 2012 national badminton champion Prajakta Sawant, says she does not feel like playing for India anymore.
Though Gopichand has continuously refused to speak on the issue, claiming the matter is sub-judice, the BAI has replied to Prajakta's latest (May 11) email through its lawyers.

Prajakta, in her letter, alleges that the national selectors have picked players, who are ranked much lower than her. "My international ranking is 78 and national ranking is 3 in doubles, but you have selected players like Pradnya Gadre, whose national ranking is 11 and international ranking is 87.

Further, you have selected Aparna Balan — a mixed doubles player in the women's team — when there is no mixed doubles event in the tournament," wrote Prajakta.

In their reply, BAI's legal counsel has said that the contents of Prajakta's email have been disputed by their client "as they do not bring out the true and correct facts. The players selected for the tournament have performed better than you in the recent past and are better suited for the national team."

Prajakta believes that she has been overlooked because national coach Gopichand promotes players from his academy in Hyderabad. Prajakta won the national women's doubles title in 2011 and 2012, and mixed doubles in 2012.
She is also the first ever Indian female to win a medal at the Asian level — bronze in the U-15 Asian mixed doubles in 2007. She stressed that her selection blues have driven her to feel unwanted and lose all her desire to represent India again.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Prajakta has offers to play for a club abroad. The club has also provided her free training in the past.

After September Mumbaikars can ride in an AC local train.

The railway authorities are contemplating rolling out the first air- conditioned local train by September this year, fares for which are currently being discussed.

Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relations officer, Western Railway, said, “We are still looking at the September deadline for the AC local train.” As per plans, the first such local would be operated on the     Churchgate- Borivli route on the         Western Railway (WR).

“We are considering running four services a day, two in the morning and two in the evening, though the exact timing needs to be decided,” said a senior railway official.

The most likely time slot for the services is around 8 am from Borivli, and around 6 pm from Churchgate — so they match the passengers’ peakhour schedule. The 12- coach AC rake would be vestibular — which means one can walk through it end to end, without coming upon any partitions.

The ladies’ compartments would be marked on the outside, in the same manner it is now, though it wouldn’t be walled off; officials expect men simply not to enter it. Much like the Delhi Metro, there would be no first or second class, or a segregated luggage compartment. The trains will have closed doors, and they would move only when all the doors are shut.

Special provisions would be made for physically challenged people, though these details have not been adequately worked out yet.

“ It’s a premium service so people wouldn’t mind paying more than that is charged for first class,” said a Western Railway official on the condition of anonymity.

Presently, the minimum fare for the first- class compartment is R 45, which increases in proportion to the distance.

AC train fares would top this by at least 10 per cent.

Exit polls point to Modi entry in Delhi

Ab ki baar Modi sarkar — that’s the unanimous verdict of several exit polls as far as the big picture is concerned, with all of them predicting either that the NDA would get a majority or would get very close to it. The polls also agreed that the BJP would get its highest tally ever — the range varying from a little over 200 to just under 300.

Most polls also predicted that the Congress would be reduced to its lowest ever tally, though one of them, the Times Now-ORG poll, put the party’s tally at between 111 and 138 seats, which means it could do better than the 114 seats it got in 1999. Another common factor in the polls was that the AIADMK and Trinamool Congress are likely to emerge as the two largest regional parties with 20 or more seats each.

While broadly agreeing on these trends, the polls were at sharp variance on the details. The Times Now-ORG poll suggested that the NDA would win 249 to 265 seats, which would leave it a little short of a majority though well within striking distance. At the other end of the range, the News 24-Today’s Chanakya poll gave the NDA 340 seats, with the BJP alone winning 291 seats. If that comes true, it would be the first time after 1984 that any party would be winning a majority on its own.

The Congress’ predicted tally too varies widely from a mere 57 in the News24 poll to a possible 138 in the Times Now poll. At 57, the Congress wouldn’t just be reduced to a historic low, it would face its biggest crisis in post-Independence history.

Coming to the wide variance among pollsters, in Bihar, for instance, the Times Now-ORG poll gave the RJD no seats at all and the JD(U) 10 seats

CITY ON BRINK OF TITLE: Dzeko Double In 4-0 Win Over Villa Leaves Pellegrini’s Men Needing Just A Point

London: Manchester City moved to the brink of the Premier League title with an emphatic 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday as Edin Dzeko scored twice to leave them needing just a point from the final game of the season.

Dzeko’s double midway through the second half relieved the pressure that had gripped the Etihad Stadium and late strikes by Stevan Jovetic and Yaya Toure, his 20th of the season, secured a comfortable victory.

City, who brought up 100 league goals for the campaign, realistically need just a point from Sunday’s home game against West Ham United to win their second league title in three years.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side moved two points clear of Liverpool at the top of the table but, with a superior goal difference of 13, a draw would be enough for City to be crowned champions while Chelsea’s title hopes are over.

At the other end of the standings, Sunderland guaranteed their Premier League survival when goals by Jack Colback and Fabio Borini sealed a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion which effectively ended Norwich City’s hopes of remaining in the top flight. With Sunderland moving to 38 points and West Brom one place above the relegation zone on 36, Norwich are three points further adrift with a vastly inferior goal difference.

Within seconds of the kickoff at the Etihad Stadium, it became apparent that Villa would look to stifle and frustrate rather than go toeto-toe with their talentpacked opponents.

With all 11 men consistently withdrawn behind the ball, the visitors set out to catch City on the break, but they rarely made it out of their own half as the title challengers launched wave after wave of attacks. City’s best chance of the first half fell to Toure, whose shot from close range was turned wide by the outstretched foot of Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, and the first 45 minutes ended with Samir Nasri poking James Milner’s cross wide.

Dzeko rode to the rescue, however, in the 64th minute when he poked home Pablo Zabaleta’s cross from close range. City then cast off the shackles and Dzeko pounced to tuck away a rebound eight minutes before Jovetic powerfully side-footed past Guzan with a minute remaining.

The coup de grace arrived in stoppage-time when Toure turned on the afterburners to stride clear of the Villa backline and powerfully finish.

Sun Pharma recalls two drugs in US

New Delhi: Drug major Sun Pharmaceuticals is recalling over 4 lakh bottles of anti-depressant and anti-allergy drugs in the US for failing to meet specifications.

The recalls of anti-depressant Venlafaxine Hydrochloride extended release tablets of different strengths and anti-allergy Cetirizine Hydrochloride chewable tablets are being made by Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories, the US arm of Sun Pharma.

The company is recalling 1,28,363 bottles of Cetirizine Hydrochloride chewable tablets of 5mg strength and another lot of 47,813 bottles of the same drug of 10mg dosage prescribed for children, according to information on the US Food and Drug Administration website.

“Stability testing found the product may not meet the drug release specification through expiry,” the FDA said.

The recall of the anti-allergy medicine, which started on April 9, is under class III, defined as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences”.

Caraco is also withdrawing two lots of anti-depressant Venlafaxine Hydrochloride as “stability results found the product did not meet the drug release dissolution specifications”.

The company is recalling 1,60,105 bottles of Venlafaxine Hydrochloride extended release tablets of 150mg strength and 91,777 bottles of 37.5mg strength in the US market. Caraco initiated the nationwide recall for this drug on March 20.

Flipkart plans to co-develop virtual fashion brand stores

Bangalore: Flipkart is planning a blitzkrieg in its fashion lifestyle category that has helped bring in a new demographic of online shoppers, including younger buyers in the age group of 20 to 27 years and those in tier II and III cities. As part of that plan, India’s e-commerce poster boy is tying up with top lifestyle brands to roll out dedicated online brand stores, subsets to Flipkart’s main store.

While the company has said that co-developed brand stores would be rolled out in the next two to three months, Flipkart’s store already shows a newly launched Puma brand store. The store stocks only Puma merchandise and has been styled to reflect Puma’s image as a premium lifestyle brand. Deals and discounts have been cloaked under ‘featured picks’ that one sees lower down in the virtual store, unlike in the main Flipkart store where good deals are highlighted.

“Brand stores will be cocreated along with the brands. We choose the brand only if we believe that there are very strong brand loyalists wanting to buy that brand,” said Shoumyan Biswas, senior director, marketing, Flipkart. Biswas, however, didn’t speak to TOI about the Puma store, which perhaps is a pilot project. Brands may like the idea because of Flipkart’s reach, something that may not be possible to build with their own virtual stores. Flipkart’s creation of a brand store will be directly indexed to the number of searches, visits, and transactions of a particular brand. “The concept is very similar to shop-in-shop formats that you see in an offline retail store. And one could move to a monetization model where the brand is paying for the visibility, like is the case offline,” added Biswas.

TOI had reported last month that American lifestyle clothing retailer Gap was finalizing a deal with e-commerce portal Myntra to launch its online store in India.

Fashion lifestyle as an etailing category is clocking growth in excess of 100%, with players like Snapdeal expecting to hit Rs 1,000 crore in fashion revenue by the end of this year.

London: Forty-four Indians, including 17 women, are among 705 aspirants shortlisted for an ambitious private mission to send four people on a planned one-way trip to Mars in 2024 to colonise the red planet.

The Netherlands-based non-profit organization Mars One announced that 353 hopefuls from around the world have been eliminated from the selection programme to become the first human Mars colonists.

The number of people remaining in this “once in many lifetimes opportunity” is now just 705, including 44 Indians of whom 27 are men and 17 are women.

The Indian aspirants come from cities such as New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune and Thiruvanathapuram.
The applicants came from over 140 countries and more than 20,000 Indians had applied for the first round. The remaining candidates will be interviewed by the Mars One selection committee. “We’re incredibly excited to start the next phase of Round 2, where we begin to better understand our candidates who aspire to take such a daring trip. They will have to show their knowledge, intelligence, adaptability and personality,” Mars One chief medical officer Norbert Kraft, said.

e-cigarette EXPLODE and set fire to barmaid in busy pub

Laura Baty, 18, was serving a customer at the Buck Inn Hotel in Richmond, North Yorks, when she heard a huge bang and saw the device shoot towards her.
The projectile flaming e-cig then singed her arms and set her dress alight.
It had been on charge behind the bar but, after setting Laura on fire, landed on the floor and scorched the vinyl tiles before burning itself out.
Shocked Laura said: “I was about to give somebody their change and I heard the bang.
"I could see the fire coming at me and I felt the heat as I ran away.
"I started crying hysterically and my arm was all black. My dress caught on fire as I ran away and I just didn’t know what was happening.
"A customer came and took me in to the bathroom to calm me down.
"She washed down my arm which was all black and I still didn’t know what had happened.”
Laura, who has worked at the pub for nearly two years, was badly shaken by the explosion.
She added: "I thought the fuse-box had blown up or a firework had gone off. Everybody was just so shocked."

The e-cigarette belonged to fellow barman Stewart Paterson, 21, who has been trying to quit smoking since December last year.
He said: “I put the e-cigarette on charge in my iPad charger, which I have done countless times before.
"I heard a huge bang that sounded like a firework. I turned around to see a ball of fire weaving about.
"I saw Laura running away and thought somebody had thrown a firework.
"A punter pointed to the e-cigarette that I had been charging and it was still smoking. It had burnt through the vinyl floor as well.
"When the battery exploded the end shot across the room and hit one punter in the stomach and left him with a red mark.
"I just keep thinking what if this had happened while I was charging it at home.
"I might have been out and the damage could have been horrendous.
"When I looked back at the footage I saw how close the fireball came to Laura’s head.
"If she was stood a couple of inches to the right she could have been badly hurt.”
Stewart, a student, added: "It was a full pub at the time and we had a local football team in celebrating the end of season.
"It is lucky that no one else was badly hurt."
Alyson Down, Community Safety Officer at North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: "What would have happened if this occurred when no one was about?
"The advice we give is to make sure you are nearby if you are charging up any product that requires charging from the mains.
"A lot of people leave them unattended, but you should never do this.”

School allows kids fag breaks to stop them bunking off school

A school head lets her pupils have cigarette breaks because she says it stops them from bunking off.Children at the school are allowed to light up twice a day under the supervision of teachers. But they only allowed to join the 10-minute sessions with parental permission.
Head Claire George says it is the only way to stop problem children absconding from school.
Tory MP Stewart Jackson has called for the local authority to review the practise.
He said: “Most reasonable people would be quite surprised by this.
“They are not adults able to make reasonable choices. They are children who should follow the rules.”
One relative of a child at the unit, who asked not to be named, added: “I am outraged that this is allowed.
“I thought the school had parental duties when our children are under their care.”
The smoking breaks have been introduced at Honeyhill pupil referral unit in Peterborough, Cambs, which caters for 200 pupils aged between 14 and 16.
Children have to hand in their cigarettes at the start of the school day and are only allowed them back for the off-site breaks.
Ms George explained: “Pupils who attend Honeyhill do so because they have failed, many more than once, in mainstream education.
“They are amongst the most challenged and challenging young people within the city and most have complex issues.
“Therefore our approach has got to be different to give them the best possible chance of getting an education which allows them to progress into employment or further education or training.
“For those pupils who do smoke, we have a clear procedure in place. Pupils and their parents/carers are asked about health related habits when they start at the school.
“Our approach is that pupils who already smoke on admission can, with parental consent, have up to two 10 minute, off-site, fully supervised smoking breaks a day.
“We appreciate some people will not agree with this approach, but we have found it far more effective than simply banning smoking, which our experience shows us leads to pupils not attending school or absconding during the day to smoke.”
An Ofsted visit in December rated Honeyhill ‘good’ with outstanding leadership and management.
Pupils at Elmete Central School in Roundhay, Leeds, were allowed to smoke twice a day on the school premises until the policy was changed in October last year.
The headteacher had said the rule was aimed at stopping pupils leaving the school premises to smoke.

I'm not a superman, Pope Francis says

Pope Francis has played down the notion that he is a "superman" who will bring sweeping reforms to the Roman Catholic Church, stressing that its ban on contraception and opposition to gay marriage will remain in place.

The pope, in an interview with Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper published on Wednesday, also said no institution had moved with more "transparency and responsibility" than the Church to protect children in the wake of its sexual abuse scandals.

That prompted a sharp rebuke from victims, with one group calling the assertion "disingenuous".

Since his election nearly a year ago, Francis has promoted the idea of a more humble Church focused on the needs of the poor, winning huge popularity and raising expectations that it would soften its rules on such issues as contraception, cohabitation, sacraments for the divorced who remarry, and gay relationships.

Asked what he felt about his celebrity status, Francis said he disliked the "mythology" of him as a man who could meet all expectations.

"To depict the pope as a sort of superman, a sort of star, seems offensive to me. The pope is a man who laughs, cries, sleeps tranquilly and has friends like everyone else, a normal person," he said.

Francis made clear he did not envision changing the Church's stance on such issues as the ban on artificial birth control enshrined in Pope Paul VI's 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae (On Human Life).

A synod of bishops to be held in October would discuss ways of applying and explaining it better, he said, calling the encyclical "prophetic and courageous".

"It's not a question of changing the doctrine but going deeper so that pastoral concern takes into account situations and what can be done for people," he said.

Francis restated the Church's position that marriage is between a man and woman. But indicating a small opening, he said

some states wanted to "justify civil unions" of various types in order to regularize economic issues such as property rights and health coverage.

A worldwide survey of Catholics last year showed a deep divide between Church officials and the faithful on issues of sexual morality. Last month Francis urged a gathering of cardinals to be "intelligent, courageous and loving" in a debate on family-related issues.

But his words in the interview appeared to be a warning to liberals not to expect too much.

SINGLED OUT

Asked about the sexual abuse scandal, in which many priests who molested children were moved from parish to parish instead of being dismissed, he said the Church had done much since the scandal first broke some 15 years ago and was being singled out for attack.

He defended the Church's record, including that of his predecessor former Pope Benedict, whom Francis credited with having the courage to start reforms.

"On this path, the Church has done much, perhaps more than all others," he said.

"The Catholic Church is perhaps the only public institution that has moved with transparency and responsibility. No-one has done more, and yet the Church is the only one that is being attacked," he said.

Victims of sexual abuse by the clergy rejected this.

"His central claim - that no one has 'done more' on abuse than the Catholic Church - is disingenuous," said the U.S.-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP). "It would be far more accurate to say that no one has done more to deny, minimize and hide child sex crimes than the Church."

The pope appeared to be referring to a report by a United Nations committee last month which accused the Vatican of systematically turning a blind eye to decades of sexual abuse of children by priests, and demanded it turn over known or suspected offenders to civil justice.

The Vatican said the report was distorted, unfair and ideologically slanted.

Kohli trending more than Dhoni

A series of losses overseas for Team India saw skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's popularity taking a hit on internet and Virat Kohli's fan following rising.
A study by search engine Google showed that Dhoni's last minute withdrawal from the Asia Cup and Kohli's century as a captain has impacted the ranking of these two cricketers on Google Search Trends.
While Kohli ended 2013 with more endorsements than Dhoni, a search trend analysis over the past 30 days revealed how online search on Kohli is on the rise leaving the popular Dhoni at second spot.
"A celebrity love-story-in-the-making linking actor Anushka Sharma’s alleged visit to New Zealand last month (in February) to be with Virat Kohli sparked huge speculation about their alleged relationship which has also fuelled search spikes on Google," Google said in a statement.
The study by Google also said that after fetching a record price in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Yuvraj Singh now features in third place on Google Search Trends.
"However these icons pale in comparison when compared with Sachin Tendulkar, who despite having retired from international cricket continues to rule the roost on Google Search Trends as the undisputed number # 1 cricketing icon," the statement said.
Also coming back from the cold, Virendera Sehwag and Suresh Raina are seeing significant traction on Google search placing them at fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Attack on Islamabad court kills 11

A BLOODY attack on a crowded District Court complex in Islamabad has left 11 people dead and about 30 others wounded, shattering hopes of an imminent negotiated end to violence gripping the country.
In a rare assault on the Pakistani capital, between four and six gunmen stormed the building in the city centre just before 9am yesterday, opening fire on court workers and visitors and lobbing grenades into lawyers’ chambers and judges’ offices before two of the attackers detonated suicide bombs inside the central court building.
The remaining gunmen are believed to have escaped in a white Toyota Prado as police surrounded the site and panicked crowds fled the building, dodging bullets, broken glass and human remains as they went.
No arrests had been made as of early evening yesterday, and police said it was too early to speculate on the identity or motives of the attackers, though some reports suggested the gunmen were trying to free a defendant due to appear before the court.
The deadly strike happened less than a day after the government announced it was halting airstrikes on suspected Taliban safe havens in the country’s remote northwest to try and kick-start faltering peace talks with Taliban intermediaries.
Talks initiated last month between government and Taliban delegates had earlier broken down after a series of attacks and retaliatory attacks by insurgents and military forces.
The Taliban were quick to deny responsibility for yesterday’s attack, which capped another weekend of violence in which 13 security force personnel defending polio vaccinators were killed in the northwest Khyber Agency Saturday and another two soldiers were killed in a targeted bombing in the same district on Sunday morning.
Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesman Shahidullah Shahid condemned the attack on the Islamabad court, and said his group would not violate its own self-imposed ceasefire.
But the latest strike only emphasises the schismatic nature of the Taliban militancy, and the central command structure’s inability to control an increasingly unruly network of affiliates.
Though the court complex has in the past hosted several anti-terrorism court hearings, The Australian understands there were no terrorism-related cases scheduled to be heard yesterday.
Most of the injured were taken to the Institute of Medical Science Hospital, where a spokesman told media that five of the injured were in critical condition.
Islamabad Police inspector general Sikander Hayat said; “The attackers first lobbed grenades at the policemen on duty. Then they started shooting, and when law enforcement officials tried to counter, they blew themselves up.”
Local reports cited eyewitnesses to the attack describing the gunmen as having the long hair favoured by Taliban terrorists.
