Two high school football players died Friday night in a freeway crash in western Pennsylvania that also killed a third person, according to state high school sports officials.
The two-vehicle crash occurred at about 10 p.m. in Sharon, about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh along the Ohio state line. Two members of the Sharon High School football team were killed and two others were hurt, according to a statement posted on the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's District 10 website.
Police did not release the names of those involved. The Sharon Herald reported two children, ages 10 and 12, were riding in the back of a pickup truck in which the driver died. One child was flown to a burn unit and the other was hospitalized.
The league canceled a playoff game scheduled for Saturday in Erie between Sharon High and Girard High School.
Phone messages left Saturday morning by The Associated Press for Sharon's police department and the school district were not immediately returned. The Mercer County coroner's office said it may release some information about the crash later Saturday.
